What are essential oils?

Essential oils (essential oils, fragrance oils, essential oils) are fragrant volatile substances with a liquid consistency, extracted from flowers, stems, roots or leaves of plants.

Essential oils are naturally present in most plants in trace amounts. The plant uses essential oil to defend and attract pollinating insects. Only aromatic plants produce large amounts of essential oils. Pure essential oils are obtained either by distillation or cold pressing.
